Belkin’s 3-in-1 Wireless Dock Charges iPhone, Apple Watch and Air Pods

Belkin 3-in-1 Wireless Dock

Belkin is known for its range of accessories for Apple devices. It has recently launched the Boost Charge 3-in-1 Wireless Charger, which can charge the iPhone, Apple Watch, and AirPods all at once.

Priced at $110, Belkin’s 3-in-1 Wireless Charger is more affordable than most other 3-in-1 wireless chargers on the market, making it an attractive option.

Available in either black or white, the 3-in-1 Wireless Charger from Belkin is made from a plastic material. It’s not the best quality charger out there because of the all-plastic build, however unless you are seeking a robust item most users will be quite happy with it..

There’s an upright wireless charging interface that can accommodate an ‌iPhone‌, an ‌Apple Watch‌ charging puck, and behind that, a small circular divot for the ‌AirPods‌ or AirPods Pro case.  Many other 3-in-1 wireless chargers have enough space for charging two iPhones at once.  The Belkin charges is designed specifically for a single ‌iPhone‌ and ‌AirPods‌, which is something to be noted.

With the ‌AirPods‌ charging space located right behind the watch, care needs to be taken  that the  ‌Apple Watch‌ does not knock the ‌AirPods‌ out of position or .  Taking into account the layout of the charging docks  care must be taken to position things correctly.  The ergonomics of the design is far from ideal and  crowding is likely to be an issue for anyone who has a loop-style band.

The upright charging space for the ‌iPhone‌ is nice because it makes it easy to put the ‌iPhone‌ down and go, with no need to position it or make sure it’s in the right spot to initiate charging, something that’s often an issue with a typical flat wireless charger.

As for the ‌Apple Watch‌ charging puck, it’s fine. It charges the ‌Apple Watch‌ in Nightstand Mode like many other charging options on the market. There are small LEDs on the front and side of the charger that let you know when it’s powered on and charging something, and a single power cord sticks out from the back. These lights can’t be disabled and could be a bit irritating at night.

This is a 7.5W wireless charger so it charges iPhones at the maximum speed possible, which is not super fast. It’s great for charging overnight or when you just need a bit of juice, but it’s not the best solution when you need power quick.

Summary

A lot of the 3-in-1 wireless charging options on the market are priced at around $150, so it’s nice to have a name brand option that’s more affordable and reliably charges the ‌iPhone‌, ‌Apple Watch‌, and ‌AirPods‌ all at once.

At $110 this is still a lot more than individual charging options for the three devices, so it’s still somewhat of a luxury.  The Belkin’s 3-in-1 Wireless Charger is not the best looking option, but it occupies a small footprint and the price tag is lower than the competition.  It is a bit of a hassle to make sure the ‌Apple Watch‌ and ‌AirPods‌ are lined up at times when using a loop-style band, but this should be seen as a minor inconvenience relative to the advantages listed.

New Galaxy Z Fold2 5G – Is it Worth Consideration?

The  Galaxy Z Fold2 has arrived and is being promoted via the media and network phone companies.

The build quality of this phone is superior to its predecessors, the Galaxy Fold and Galaxy Z Flip.  Whether the phone  its folded or unfolded, there’s a solidity to the device that previous Galaxy versions lacked.

The Galaxy Z Fold2’s has a  re-engineered design which brings about improvement in quality .  The new Hideaway Hinge, ensures the device now unfolds smoothly and securely. Not only does the hinge allow the device to open up completely flat, it disappears within the phone’s body when it’s unfolded.  This design allows the phone to sit open at nearly any angle. This may not appear to be a big deal, but if you like to video chat or watch movies on your phone while doing something else it is very useful.

A range of new colours have been added (Mystic Black and Mystic Bronze), with a brushed texture along the sides of the device. The use of Gorilla Glass Victus on the expanded cover screen and Gorilla Glass Six on the rear of the phone  help the Galaxy Z Fold2 feel that it is worth a hefty price tag.  This 2020 phone, is compatible with 5G if your network supplier offers it.

The Reality of having a larger screen for your use.
The major attraction of folding phones  has always been the ability to fit a bigger, tablet-like device into your pocket.  When fully unfolded, the phone’s Infinity Flex main screen is impressive. There is 7.6 inches of viewing area.  That makes the phone ideal for reading or watching video.  Making things look even sharper and clearer is a 120 Hz adaptable refresh rate, meaning the picture moves smoothly.

Samsung also includes features such as Flex Mode, Multi-Active Window and App Continuity, turning the phone into a multi-tasking machine. Multi tasking such as texting  or sending an e-mail without clicking off the show you’re watching can be accommodated.  Rearrange your app windows on the main screen and you can do just that. Want a closer look at a picture in an article you were reading? Open up your phone and it’s right there without even having to click.

The Camera and Battery Life continue be at the upper end of life expectation.
The phone continues to have a multiple camera system. While multiple cameras have been standard on high-end smartphones for a while, few give you five to work with. There are two 10-megapixel selfie cameras, on the front cover and main screen, with three 12-megapixel cameras on the back of the device (with ultra-wide, wide-angle and telephoto lenses). The brand’s camera app is easy to use and is capable of producing professional-quality photos and 4K videos regardless of the time of day.  An intelligent 4500mAh dual battery will make charging concerns a thing of the past, as it adjusts power usage throughout the day based on how you’re using the phone.

Summary
With the Galaxy Z Fold2, Samsung has succeeded in making folding smartphones something to be taken seriously.  The brand’s latest device isn’t perfect (no phone is).  The jury is still out on the folding screen’s long-term durability.  Only time and usage will enable a verdict to be arrived at.

The biggest attraction of this folding phone will be to assist in reducing the number of  devices—phones, tablets and laptops— that some need to carry about every day.  The Fold2 should help decide if some of this hardware can be discarded.

Reasons to Retire You Old P.C. or Laptop

Old PC

It’s tempting with the rapid rise of remote work due to COVID-19 to think that out of sight is out of mind when it comes to your PCs. If you are working at home and can still hop on a video call, then everything must be good. The truth can be more complicated.

Many individuals and companies have a four-year PC refresh cycle, the new wave of remote work may, if anything, accelerate that cycle. Prior to the current global health crisis, computer users were becoming more mobile than ever before, raising risks around security, flexibility, efficiency and efficacy.

While the precautionary and voluntary remote work continues, those working in IT are facing unprecedented challenges. Onboarding employees, supporting current ones, and maintaining systems for maximum productivity are challenges they are struggling to solve.

Managing aging systems at scale is challenging when everyone is in one place. With more and more people now operating remotely, the issues multiply exponentially. No business can afford unplanned down time on a regular basis, and employees can grow increasingly frustrated as their productivity drops.

“Aged systems are costing businesses in terms of lost productivity and security risk, and with much of the workforce remote now, IT managers are faced with even bigger maintenance and support challenges.” says Matt Unangst, Director of Commercial Client Business at AMD.

If you or your organization still sees PC refreshes as a luxury, try seeing it instead as an opportunity to unlock immense improvements in productivity, performance and collaboration. The AMD Ryzen™ PRO 4000 family of processors and partner platforms, for example, cover all the bases for any organization’s modern computing needs, delivering a straight line to productivity and PC modernization.

Here are five great reasons to perform a PC refresh now.

Turbocharge performance.

Here’s the new reality of work in 2020: increased complexity, juggling workloads, mega multi-tasking, and operating remotely. Offering the most cores and threads in a mobile business processor for ultra-thin notebooks with the Ryzen 7 PRO 4750U processor, AMD Ryzen PRO processors deliver top-of-line performance and responsiveness across a wide variety of workloads, from crunching data to rendering videoconference calls to compiling code.[3]

Improve security features.

Protecting sensitive corporate data has never been more important. Modern notebooks and PCs are often never fully turned off, raising the threat for stolen data. AMD Ryzen PRO processors, featuring AMD PRO security, deliver a multi-layered approach to security features, helping protect data from sophisticated attacks and avoiding downtime.

Minimise  IT management time.

IT departments, already spread thin, need all the help they can get with supporting remote workers. AMD PRO Manageability is a full cross-platform feature set enabled on all PRO processors that simplifies remote device management. With AMD PRO manageability, IT can manage a mixed environment of PCs in their fleet with ease, from simplified deployment with Windows® Autopilot, to efficient patch management to address security vulnerabilities, to ongoing management for a wide range of system issues.

Boost efficiency/productivity.

Simply put, organizations need the latest hardware to drive today’s modern software experiences. There are also significant stealth costs associated with legacy systems, including on-going maintenance and repair services, that chip away at the bottom line and exceed the cost of upgrading PCs or laptops. New PCs powered by Ryzen PRO processors help boost efficiency by delivering leadership performance and up to 20hours of battery life on a premium platform[2] – driving up productivity by eliminating downtime that comes with aged hardware issues such as long start up time, frequent crashes, and shortened battery life,

Reliability

With enterprise-grade quality, long-term reliability, and planned software stability, new PCs with Ryzen PRO processors can bring peace of mind to organizations and are a logical choice for today’s remote and highly mobile workforce.

Apple iOS Operating System – Five Recommendations

Apple iOS

You may scratch your head and ask “What is iOS“?

iOS is a mobile operating system created and developed by Apple Inc. exclusively for its hardware.

There are so many apps in the iOS App Store that it can be difficult to find new apps to download, plus it’s easy to overlook great apps that are a bit older. This week’s picks include apps for managing tasks, finding content on Netflix, and organising your home, plus some fun games.

  • Tasks (Free) – Tasks is a to-do app that lets you create tasks that you need to work on, either immediately or over time. You can organise everything in your life into different categories like Family, Home, Office and more, with sub tasks that can be used for managing projects. Tasks can be managed by the list they’re organised in or by date for those that are due soon. Plenty of features are available, like tags, multi-user support, date detection, image support, and more. Tasks is free, but unlocking “Plus” features requires an in-app purchase.
  • New on Flix (Free) – Looking for something new to watch on Netflix? New on Flix is the app for you. It’s not an official Netflix app and it’s pretty simple – it just shows you what new content is added to Netflix every day. New on Flix is free, but you can pay $0.99 to remove ads.
  • Homer (Free) – Homer is a digital binder that keeps track of everything needed to run your house. You can take pictures of appliance receipts and warranties, log repairs, take stock of the items in each room, make shopping lists for things you need, and more.
  • Crashy Cats (Free) – Crashy Cats is an endless runner where the goal is to take on the role of a cat to jump, bounce, and fly through levels while knocking over as many things as possible. It’s free to play, but there are in-app purchases for additional in-game “Fish” currency.
  • SpongeBob: Patty Pursuit (Apple Arcade) – SpongeBob: Patty Pursuit is a new ‌Apple Arcade‌ game that’s described as a platform runner. In the app, players take on the role of SpongeBob to defeat Plankton’s minions and rescue SpongeBob’s friends.  It’s free and there are no ads, but a $4.99 per month subscription to ‌Apple Arcade‌ is required.

Apple Promotes Multiplication Benefits of iPhone and Apple Watch Integration

Apple Products

Apple has launched a new webpage promoting the benefits of integration between iPhone and Apple Watch. “Add them together. Multiply their power,” reads the minisite, which highlights the benefits that come with using the two devices together.

Scrolling down the vector image-based page brings some of the more basic features into view first, like the ability to answer or decline a phone call or FaceTime call on ‌Apple Watch‌, and then transfer it to your ‌iPhone‌.

Messages are next, with ‌Apple Watch‌ features like quick replies, Tapback, emoji support and Scribbles covered, as well as the ability to ask Siri to compose or reply to an incoming message using your voice.

The site goes on to highlight the two devices’ deep Camera app integration and the way you can use ‌Apple Watch‌ to remotely set up a shot on ‌iPhone‌, including the ability to frame and shoot, zoom in and out, switch between the ‌iPhone‌’s front and back cameras, and switch between camera modes.

Apple shines a light on the music capabilities of ‌Apple Watch‌, such as Apple Music streaming, playlist support, and remote ‌iPhone‌ playback controls. There is a section on ‌Apple Watch‌ health functions with iOS Health and Activity app integration, as well as mentions for hand’s off support in Maps, Find My, and Apple Pay.

The site does a good job of surfacing some lesser known features available to prospective customers who might be thinking about pairing the two devices.

How to Transfer Your Signal Account and Chat History to a New Apple iPhone or Apple iPad

Encrypted messaging app Signal has introduced a new account transfer feature to make it easier for users to migrate their chat history to a new iPhone or iPad.

The feature part of Signal’s version 3.9.1 update was released in August 2020.  The Official Announcement read: –

Signal iOS now includes a new feature that makes it possible to switch to a brand-new ‌iPhone‌ or ‌iPad‌ while securely transferring Signal information from your existing iOS device. As with every new Signal feature, the process is end-to-end encrypted and designed to protect your privacy. Transfers also occur over a local connection (similar to AirDrop), so even large migrations can be completed quickly.

If you have your old iOS device and the new one to hand, you can transfer your Signal account and messages by following these steps.

  1. Download the Signal app on your new ‌iPhone‌ or ‌iPad‌.
  2. Launch Signal on the new iOS device and begin the setup process.
  3. Enter your phone number in the Signal app, then choose Transfer from iOS device.
  4. Look for the migration prompt on your old iOS device, and confirm that you want to start the transfer process.
  5. Use your old device to scan the QR code displayed on the new device.
  6. Wait a few minutes for the transfer process to complete.

Apple iPhone 12 – Latest News

Apple iPhone 12

Reports state production of the iPhone 12 models began in July, according to a paywalled DigiTimes report.

The wording of the report suggests that all ‌iPhone 12‌ models will have entered production in July.  It is unclear if that will result in all models launching simultaneously. While it is likely that Apple announces its ‌iPhone 12‌ lineup in September as usual, analyst Ming-Chi Kuo and others have previously claimed that higher-end models with support for ultra-fast mmWave 5G will face a delayed launch due to production challenges.

Apple is expected to release four new iPhones later this year, including two ‌iPhone 12‌ models with 5.4-inch and 6.1-inch displays and two ‌iPhone 12‌ Pro models with 6.1-inch and 6.7-inch displays. All four models are expected to feature OLED displays, 5G support, and a smaller notch, while the two higher models are rumored to gain a LiDAR sensor.
