Samsung Launches SmartThings Find, a New Way To Quickly and Easily Locate Your Galaxy Devices

This is Part of the SmartThings app.

SmartThings Find helps you quickly find your connected Galaxy devices.

Samsung Electronics recently announced the launch of SmartThings Find, a new service that helps you quickly and easily locate Galaxy devices. Six million users across Korea, the U.K. and U.S. signed up for early access to the service. SmartThings Find is ready for a global launch on devices running Android 8 or later. SmartThings Find uses Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) and ultra-wideband (UWB) technologies to help people find select Galaxy smartphones, tablets, smartwatches and earbuds.

Utilizing the latest in BLE and UWB technology, SmartThings Find will make your life less stressful when it comes to searching for misplaced Galaxy devices.  It has the added advantage of using AR in conjunction with maps and sounds to guide you back to your devices.  SmartThings Find is a simple and visual solution that will help you easily locate your favourite devices. This is just one example of the new meaningful mobile experiences that UWB technology will bring to people across the world.”

Easily Find More of Your Devices

After completing a quick registration process, SmartThings users can easily find their Galaxy devices – from smartphones, tablets and smartwatches, down to each individual earbud. Whether you dropped your Galaxy Note20 Ultra behind the sofa, can’t remember where you stashed your Galaxy Buds Live, or left your Galaxy Watch3 somewhere so secure you can’t find it, the SmartThings Find service will help you keep more of your Galaxy devices safe through the easy-to-use SmartThings app.

Offline Doesn’t Mean “Off-The-Grid”

With the SmartThings Find service, you can easily locate your missing device even if it’s offline. That’s because SmartThings users can now opt in to securely use their Galaxy smartphone or tablet to help others locate their lost devices. Once a device has been offline for 30 minutes, it produces a BLE signal that can be received by other devices. If you report your device as lost via SmartThings Find, any nearby Galaxy smartphone or tablet that has opted into helping find misplaced devices can alert the Samsung server about its location, which will in turn notify you. All SmartThings Find user data is encrypted and securely protected, ensuring that the device’s location is not revealed to anyone except its owner.

Find Your Galaxy Faster With More Detailed Directions

Locating your missing device is a breeze with integrated map directions and the ability to “ring” a lost device to find it more quickly. When you lose a device, you can simply open SmartThings Find on your smartphone or tablet and select the device you want to locate. Your smartphone will then show you the exact location of your device on a map. Once you’re close to your device, you can choose to either have your device “ring” or locate it using the AR-based Search Nearby function, which displays colour graphics that increase in intensity when you are getting closer to your device.

 Availability

A new software update for the SmartThings app will be released for Galaxy smartphones and tablets running Android 8 or later around the world.  After that, users can access the SmartThings Find service by tapping the banner at the bottom of the home screen in the SmartThings app. In addition, from early next year (2021), Samsung will further expand these capabilities to tracking tags, which will help users locate their favourite items, not only for Galaxy devices, but also others as well.

Gmail App’s Dark Mode for iPad and iPhone

Has Gmail App’s Dark Mode Finally been Perfected for iPhone and iPad?

The image above lets you see what “Dark Mode is about.

After many false starts and software with problems of functionality, Google appears to have mastered the long-awaited “dark mode” for Gmail.

This functionality is for Apple iPad and iPhone.

Version 6.0.200519 of Gmail, which propagated through the App Store overnight, includes the following release notes:

” You can now switch between dark or light theme after upgrading to iOS 13.

You can use the system theme set by default.

Google first announced dark mode for its Gmail app in September 2019.

Progress since then has been patchy on iOS.

Problems such as users managing to activate dark mode in the app, only to find that it vanishes when they close the iPad or iPhone and restart it.

Some potential users haven’t been able to access the feature at all.

The recent update should hopefully bring to an end months of waiting for a significant number of users.

To enable dark mode in Gmail on ‌iPhone‌ and ‌iPad‌, update the app on your device, then follow these steps.

  1. Launch the Gmail app.
  2. Tap the Menu icon (the three lines) in the top-left corner of the screen.
  3. Scroll down and tap Settings.
  4. Tap Theme. (If you don’t see the option, try force-quitting and then relaunching the app.)
  5. Select Light, Dark, or System default.

The latter option makes Gmail’s theme default to your device’s system settings. This default option is useful if you’ve set the appearance of IOS to change automatically depending on the time of day.

Note that if your device is running iOS 11 or iOS 12, you’ll see a Dark theme toggle instead of a Theme submenu in the Settings screen.

Apple’s Foldable iPhone – Rumour or Reality?

iPhone Prototype Allegedly Features Separate Display Panels Connected by a Hinge

Samsung has already brought to the market a foldable smart phone the “Galaxy Z Phone 5G”.

It is too early to comment on how successful the Samsung product will be in the market.

APPLE is working on a foldable iPhone prototype.

Reportedly it will feature two separate display panels that are connected by a hinge.

The Samsung Z Phone has a single display across the fold.

Though the ‌iPhone‌ features two separate displays connected by a hinge, it is claimed that the panels look “fairly continuous and seamless.”

SAMSUNG’S Galaxy Fold

Samsung’s foldable smartphone, the Galaxy Fold, is designed as a single display with a fold in the middle that allows it to open and close.

Microsoft’s Surface Neo and Duo

It is reported that Apple’s prototype looks similar to Microsoft’s Surface Neo and Surface Duo

The Microsoft phones are foldable dual display devices that feature two displays connected with a hinge.

There is no indicative time scale of when Apple might develop a foldable ‌iPhone‌.

However, there have been rumours about work on such a device dating back to 2016.

Patents for such a device have been filed.

It’s not clear if the foldable ‌iPhone‌ will ever move out of a prototyping stage, but it doesn’t look like a foldable device is launching in the near future.

Perhaps Apple will await to see how the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold2 5G progresses in the market and how dependable and durable it turns out to be when in the hands of users.   This could be a “wait and see situation”.  It will also let provide Apple with additional time to further develop their product.

The best camera phone in 2020

The best camera phones take photos and video that can compete with traditional cameras.

The best camera phones use the latest technology and are often capable of delivering better results than the a ‘dedicated’ camera. As screens get larger, camera phone sensors get more advanced and chipsets get more powerful, it can be challenging to keep up to date with of latest and best mobile phones.  A list of the best can be accessed  for you right here.

The best camera phones don’t just deliver a lot of  power – they also consist of a package of convenience, with numerous apps at your fingertips. However, one of the most impressive aspects of these handsets is their megapixel count. The Samsung Galaxy S20 Ultra has an impressive 108MP sensor, 8K video and a 100x digital zoom – specs that traditional cameras just haven’t achieved yet.

The S20 Ultra isn’t an outlier. Powerful sensors are becoming the norm for flagship phones.  While phones aren’t yet able to beat the best DSLRs or the best mirrorless cameras for image quality, the technology is moving so quickly that it almost feels like it’s only a matter of time.

The most significant advantage that camera phones hold over cameras is how small they are in comparison. Even the best compact cameras can still prove annoyingly bulky, but folding phones such as the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip and the Motorola Razr are making massive strides in compact technology.

A present and future aspect of camera phones is the advent of 5G, with 5G phones such as the Samsung Galaxy S20 Ultra and the OnePlus Nord hitting the market this year. It will be interesting  to see what the upcoming iPhone 12 brings to the table when it’s finally released this year.

Can you match Apple or Samsung Technology with Belkin’s New Speaker/Charger?

Belkin Speaker Charger

Belkin provides a range of iPhone accessories that include wireless chargers

A latest product pairs wireless charging functionality with a home speaker.

The SoundForm Elite Smart Speaker and Wireless Charger, which is priced at $300, was released in May.  It is a niche product because of its price point, it may fill a void for those who are looking for devices that have a range of functions.

It has a rounded body shape with an angled top area that’s designed to fit a smartphone for wireless charging purposes. Any size ‌iPhone‌ will fit and work here.

There was concern that the speaker would look unfinished without a smartphone charging on it, but the angled smartphone charging platform looks like a deliberate design decision. The speaker is covered in a mesh fabric, but it’s clothlike and has give, so it almost feels more like a sleeve than a part of the speaker.

The speaker is available in either black or white.  There are touch controls on the top for activating Bluetooth, changing the volume, playing/pausing music, or turning off the microphone (and thus preventing Google Assistant from listening). The icons are also a little bit light in colour.

A small light on the wireless charging pad lets you know when your smartphone is charging, and there are a series of LEDs on the front that shine through the fabric cover to give you a visual on when Google Assistant is interacting with you.

This is a smart speaker, and setting it up requires the Google Home app on an ‌iPhone‌ or Android smartphone. If you are not a Google user (i.e. your kit is Apple and Apps are from the Apple Store) then this will be a problem.  You need to ne aware of this issue as it is likely to prove problematic unless you are persistent and have technical “know how”.

With Google Assistant, the speaker can play on request  when asked from these linked services: YouTube Music, Google Play Music, Spotify, Pandora, and Deezer, with a default able to be set in the Google Home app. You will note Apple Music is not on this list.  If you are an Apple Music user then check out the possibilities and challenges of connecting to this.

Google Assistant  in addition to playing music, provides services such as answering queries, translating, providing weather information, adjusting volume, controlling linked smart home products, providing daily news, setting timers, setting up music routines, broadcasting voice messages, and more.

The quality of the output from the SoundForm Elite is of high quality and unless you are very “sound sensitive” most listeners will be pleased with the sound quality.  The sound is loud enough that it’s able to fill a normal sized room with high quality sound even at high volume.

Bottom Line

If you’re in Apple’s ecosystem and use ‌Apple Music‌ and Siri, the Belkin SoundForm Elite Hi-Fi Smart Speaker and Wireless Charger isn’t going to be worth the purchase because it’s just not set up for Apple’s devices and services. It doesn’t work with ‌Apple Music‌ except over Bluetooth, there is no ‌AirPlay‌ 2 support, and it isn’t HomeKit compatible.

If you have a mix of Apple and Android devices and also have a Google Home setup, it’s a different story. In that situation, it’s a solid speaker that offers high-quality Devialet sound at a reasonable price, and provides all the bells and whistles you get with Google Assistant integration. And to top it all off, there’s a handy wireless charger, making the speaker a versatile and useful desktop companion.

New Galaxy Z Fold2 5G – Is it Worth Consideration?

The  Galaxy Z Fold2 has arrived and is being promoted via the media and network phone companies.

The build quality of this phone is superior to its predecessors, the Galaxy Fold and Galaxy Z Flip.  Whether the phone  its folded or unfolded, there’s a solidity to the device that previous Galaxy versions lacked.

The Galaxy Z Fold2’s has a  re-engineered design which brings about improvement in quality .  The new Hideaway Hinge, ensures the device now unfolds smoothly and securely. Not only does the hinge allow the device to open up completely flat, it disappears within the phone’s body when it’s unfolded.  This design allows the phone to sit open at nearly any angle. This may not appear to be a big deal, but if you like to video chat or watch movies on your phone while doing something else it is very useful.

A range of new colours have been added (Mystic Black and Mystic Bronze), with a brushed texture along the sides of the device. The use of Gorilla Glass Victus on the expanded cover screen and Gorilla Glass Six on the rear of the phone  help the Galaxy Z Fold2 feel that it is worth a hefty price tag.  This 2020 phone, is compatible with 5G if your network supplier offers it.

The Reality of having a larger screen for your use.
The major attraction of folding phones  has always been the ability to fit a bigger, tablet-like device into your pocket.  When fully unfolded, the phone’s Infinity Flex main screen is impressive. There is 7.6 inches of viewing area.  That makes the phone ideal for reading or watching video.  Making things look even sharper and clearer is a 120 Hz adaptable refresh rate, meaning the picture moves smoothly.

Samsung also includes features such as Flex Mode, Multi-Active Window and App Continuity, turning the phone into a multi-tasking machine. Multi tasking such as texting  or sending an e-mail without clicking off the show you’re watching can be accommodated.  Rearrange your app windows on the main screen and you can do just that. Want a closer look at a picture in an article you were reading? Open up your phone and it’s right there without even having to click.

Samsung Galaxy Z Fold2 in Mystic Bronze

The Camera and Battery Life continue be at the upper end of life expectation.
The phone continues to have a multiple camera system. While multiple cameras have been standard on high-end smartphones for a while, few give you five to work with. There are two 10-megapixel selfie cameras, on the front cover and main screen, with three 12-megapixel cameras on the back of the device (with ultra-wide, wide-angle and telephoto lenses). The brand’s camera app is easy to use and is capable of producing professional-quality photos and 4K videos regardless of the time of day.  An intelligent 4500mAh dual battery will make charging concerns a thing of the past, as it adjusts power usage throughout the day based on how you’re using the phone.

Summary
With the Galaxy Z Fold2, Samsung has succeeded in making folding smartphones something to be taken seriously.  The brand’s latest device isn’t perfect (no phone is).  The jury is still out on the folding screen’s long-term durability.  Only time and usage will enable a verdict to be arrived at.

The biggest attraction of this folding phone will be to assist in reducing the number of  devices—phones, tablets and laptops— that some need to carry about every day.  The Fold2 should help decide if some of this hardware can be discarded.

iPad versus Android – Strengths and Weakness

iPad versus Android

Deciding factors in making a Choice.

Purchasing an iPad or an Android i.e. Samsung Tablet, is not a decision that you should make lightly. There are many pros and cons between the two software and hardware capabilities.

In respect  of Apple you can connect to more than wireless keyboards and accessories of that nature. Media devices and musical instruments  are able to hook up to an iPad. Android’s have a vast amount of products and software to choose between.

iPad: Strengths

The iPhone/iPad ecosystem includes the App Store, which has over a million apps, many of which are designed with the iPad’s larger display in mind. This ecosystem also includes accessories, which go beyond just tablet cases, wireless keyboards and external speakers. You can do everything from hook your guitar into an iPad to converting your iPad into a miniature coin-operated arcade game.

The iPad also tends to be more stable and easier to use than Android tablets. Apple approves each app individually, ensuring that it (mostly) does what it claims it will do and the worst of the bugs are eliminated. Because Apple and app developers only need to support a limited number of devices, it is easier to stamp out bugs. And while Android has made great strides in becoming easier to use, Apple’s device tends to be more simple and less intimidating.

The iPad is a market leader, with each iPad release continually pushing the industry forward with one of the fastest tablets on the market. In fact, the iPad Pro exceeds the performance of many laptops.

iPad: Weaknesses

The trade-off in being more stable and easier to use is having less customization and ability to expand. While it is great that each app is checked by Apple before being released into the app store, and iPad users can rest a little easier knowing that it is harder for malware to get onto their device, this approval process does lock out some apps that would be useful.

The iPad also lacks the ability to expand its storage through microSD cards. There are other options, such as Dropbox, and you can use some external drives with the iPad, but the lack of support for microSD and Flash drives is a definite negative.

Android: Strengths

Android greatest strength  is the vast array of devices from which to choose and the amount you can customize your tablet once you make your purchase.  There are some great premier Android tablets from makers like Samsung to go along with hundreds of other lesser-known name brands. Android  supports some features like widgets (small apps that run on your home screen so you don’t have to open them) that Apple has stayed away from.

Android’s Google Play marketplace has advanced in the past few years. While the lack of supervision of app quality means more of those apps will be throwaways without much use, the boost in numbers does provide a lot more variety.

Android: Weaknesses

The lack of supervision and quality control over Google Play (the App store) is one of the big downsides to Android. You know exactly what you are getting when you download name-brand apps like Netflix or Hulu Plus, but when you see/download some little-known app, you don’t quite know what you are going to get.  Amazon gets around this by providing their own App Store for the Kindle Fire tablets, but that means the Kindle Fire has a more limited app selection.

Piracy has done some damage to the Android platform. While it is possible to pirate apps for the iPad, it’s much easier on Android. The amount of piracy has led some app developers to stick with the iPhone and iPad rather than risk the money it would take to create an Android version of their apps.

The variety of devices can be a good point when shopping for what you want, it has its downside in support. Android operating system updates are not always compatible with all devices, and it can be difficult for app developers to stamp out bugs on all supported devices. This can lead to stability problems in some apps.

How to Transfer Your Signal Account and Chat History to a New Apple iPhone or Apple iPad

Encrypted messaging app Signal has introduced a new account transfer feature to make it easier for users to migrate their chat history to a new iPhone or iPad.

The feature part of Signal’s version 3.9.1 update was released in August 2020.  The Official Announcement read: –

  1. Download the Signal app on your new ‌iPhone‌ or ‌iPad‌.
  2. Launch Signal on the new iOS device and begin the setup process.
  3. Enter your phone number in the Signal app, then choose Transfer from iOS device.
  4. Look for the migration prompt on your old iOS device, and confirm that you want to start the transfer process.
