How can You Use Your Hosted Domain Name[1]?

Lacking Ideas or Direction for your Domain Name?

Possibilities of Choice

Perhaps the first thing I should state is that once you have at least purchased, hosted and demonstrated to yourself that your Domain Name is live and active with perhaps a WordPress theme installed a lack of options is rarely an issue.  The norm is that there are too many options and how do you select the best option or options?

You NEED a PLAN

Plan for Domain Name Site

Essentially and ideally you need a plan setting out what you want to do.  You will probably be aware and if not do some research (I will highlight various options below and on subsequent posts) that there are literally thousands of organisations which imply they can make you a lot of money in double quick time once you have a Web Site.  Take it from me that is simply “hype” and the number of people who have made substantial sums of money in a very limited time frame is a very small percentage of the total involved in this market (estimates state over 90% of Marketers do not make money on the Internet).

BEWARE of Clever Marketing!

Beware Clever Marketing

I have come to the conclusion that some (please note some, NOT all) of those selling Internet Marketing Programs make their money from Marketing and Selling the Digital Product to customers, but perhaps have never made much money from the implementation or use of the  product they are selling.  It could be said they are selling the “idea or concept” not the actual experience of having used the product to make money from the practical application of the product.  I sometimes feel there are comparisons with Multi-Level Marketing (MLM).

Pyramid Selling

MLM is a business model or marketing strategy in which the distributors’ income includes their own sales, and a percentage of the sales group they recruit, which is commonly known as their ‘down-line’. Customers can also sign up as a distributor to sell the company’s product.  In practice what often happens is selling the product is secondary to recruiting distributors with the product often being overpriced and simply used as a “magnet” to build a network, hence also the name “Net Work Marketing” or “Pyramid Selling“.   While some have made a lot of money in MLM and it is not illegal I now stay clear of it for “ethical reasons”.

A FEW OPTIONS and IDEAS.

Internet Marketing

Internet Marketing
Internet marketing, or online marketing, refers to advertising and marketing efforts that use the Web and email to drive direct sales via electronic commerce, in addition to sales leads from websites or emails.

There are many Free and Paid for courses available which will take you into the mechanics of Internet Marketing.  At this stage a warning is required.  Unless you have a lot of money to go on a specialist course in perhaps a “niche market” it will take time to learn the mechanics of Internet Marketing and probably even more time to achieve a degree of success.  Don’t give up your day job in the short term unless you happen to have no dependants and you are only responsible for the upkeep of yourself.  Marketers when selling courses etc, have a well worn script of rags to riches which is regularly trotted out.  In about fifty percent of Webinars (online sales promotions which tend to last at least 1 hour) you will quickly find a similar theme occurring again and again.   Treat all of these with scepticism.  After listening to a few you begin to say – “not again“.

Affiliate Marketing
You will find the word “Affiliate” occurring again and again in respect of Internet Marketing. So here is a dictionary definition “a marketing arrangement by which an online retailer pays commission to an external website for traffic or sales generated from its referrals.”  Here is a Link to a site that provides a lot of relevant information >>> Click Here <<<

Autoresponder
Almost certainly no matter what you do with your Domain (except selling it) you will want to “sign up” for an AutoResponder.  “An autoresponder is a computer program that automatically answers an e-mail sent to it”.  What happens is that when someone “lands on” your Domain Name Web Site you have a “contact box” for them to enter their email address.  This address is then automatically transferred to an autoresponder where it is retained and held for present and future use.  The autoresponder can confirm they have signed up to your Web Site and is used to send them offers and reminders on a prearranged  time frame in the future.

AWeber Click Automations - Click this, send that
There are a great number of “autoresponders” in the marketplace but some are more comfortable with Internet Marketing than others.  As far as I am aware all autoresponders charge a monthly or annual fee, mostly based on likely usage with a minimum fee being payable.  My recommended autoresponder which is comfortable with Internet Marketing is “AWEBER“(Please note this is an Affiliate Link and if you join I would earn a commission).  I have used others but suddenly they have closed my account and refused to explain why.  Almost certainly it was because I was promoting Digital Offers as an Affiliate.  I have also enclosed a FREE Aweber PDF LINK describing the writing of Emails >>> Click Here <<<.

Squeeze/Landing Page Builder
In the event you decide to get involved in Internet Marketing you will need what is known as a “Squeeze Page Builder or Landing Page Builder”.  This piece of Software is used to build pages which have offers of Digital products, Physical products or Services on them or have Sales Pages promoting products.  There are many products in the market with a wide range of prices.  Many of these software Landing Pages can be purchased as an “ADD ON” to WordPress (i.e. known as a Plug In).  These Plug Ins are loaded onto your hosted Domain Name Site which will already have WordPress installed.  The prices of these software’s and their features vary enormously from monthly fees to outright purchase of a software package.  There is also a regular drip feed of new low cost new Page Builders suitable for Internet Marketing which come to market.

Landing Pages for your Domain Name

If you go down this route I suggest you do some research via Google or YouTube before deciding which software to purchase.  I am providing an Affiliate Link to “InstaBuilder” which is fine for most purposes and reasonably priced, however I suggest you use this link to help you research similar products prior to making any buy decision.

Where too Next?
The foregoing has planted a few ideas and highlighted pros and cons.  In my next post I will continue to outline possible direction’s of travel in respect of a variety of options using your Hosted Domain Name.

Do Not Give Up with Domain Name

cPanel and an Email for your Domain Name

Domain Name recap of Progress
O.K., for those who are still with me I want to simply summarise where you should be now and where this post may or could take you.

You should by this stage have selected a Domain Name, have the Domain Name hosted, and have WordPress or other platform building software installed on you Domain Name.  You may even have installed a few “plugins” if you are using WordPress.  Remember we are operating on a “shoestring budget” so the vast majority of tips to date are based on the need to minimise cost and provide a suitable final result.   Quite properly your main focus to date will have been “to get something up and working” and “build confidence” that you can actually do this.  If you are still struggling with the “how to” keep at it until you succeed.  DO NOT progress beyond this stage.  Remember, “Genius is 1 percent inspiration and 99 percent perspiration.”

Domain Names - Inspiration

If you have achieved all the previously mentioned “goals” then I am going to provide you with a few other simple tasks it is possible to do using your cPanel.  As stated in a previous post I am not a cPanel expert but there is any amount of “Expert Free Advice” available on the Web and YouTube for technical aspects of the cPanel.

cPanel “aide-memoire”
I am not trying to be smart or cheeky.  However, there is so much to learn in Information Technology and there is so much information. You will likely be bombarded with over hyped offers thrown at you (they call this “Internet Marketing”).  You may begin to wonder what is a cPanel?  I have been there, so I know what happens when something is used as a “one off” to get things “up and going“.

cPanel Reminder

So, just to remind you “cPanel is a web based hosting control panel provided by many hosting providers to website owners allowing them to manage their websites from a web based interface.”  You will need your User Name and Password to access your cPanel.

cPanel for setting up Domain Name Email address
Do you think it would look very professional if you set up an email address that compliments your Domain Name?  Well that is possible.  For example this domain name is “myprodomain.com” and I have an email address “robert@myprodomain.com”.  You can now do the same for your Domain Name.

Lets help set up your email.  Login into your cPanel and scroll down to section titled “Email” and click on top left hand corner of section “Email Accounts”.

Email for Domain Name

When you click on this you will be taken to the following screen:-

Email Create

Click on “CREATE” button which will take you to the following screen:-

Email Creation 2

When you enter this screen there will be a heading “Domain” and if you click on down arrow it will give you a list of domains or if you have only 1 domain there will be no down arrow.  Click on the Domain Name you want to set up an email for.  In the nest box “USERNAME” you will be able to enter the desired prefix to the Domain Name selection made previously.  You may decide to enter your “name” or perhaps “customer service” or other relevant prefix.  Make sure your prefix is relevant to the Web Site you have set up.

Next Sub Heading is security.  I simply leave “Set Password Now” box ticked and the system generates a Password.  You do not need to note the password if you are not going to redirect (explanation below) the email, but if you are unsure copy the Password into “Note Pad” or similar system.  Hit “GENERATE” button and “hey presto” a Password is generated.

Below the Generate button there are a number of other boxes.  Leave them all in “Default mode” and Press “CREATE” button at the bottom of the page.  When you press “CREATE” button you will be taken to a screen similar to that below.

Webmail Application

Choose one of the Web Mail Applications – it does not matter which one you choose.  When you select your application you will be taken to your email screen.   Your email screen will be similar to the screen below.  You will notice that the Web Mail Application I choose was “roundcube”.

Email Application by Webmail

You can go back to you “Home Screen” on the cPanel; scroll down to Email section, click on “Email Accounts” and you will be taken to the screen below previously referred to for “Email Creation”.  However, in the bottom half of this screen there is a list of your email Account(s), Restrictions, Storage Used and buttons titled “CHECK EMAIL”, “MANAGE” and “CONNECT DEVICES”

Checking Email by domain Name

CHECK EMAIL button
When you click on this button it will take you to your email account.  You do not need a password to access this as long as you have signed into your cPanel.

MANAGE button
Clicking on this button results in a screen that lets you manage your email and at the bottom of the screen there is even an OPTION to let you DELETE your email.  You can have a look as you can do no harm by simply clicking the button.

CONNECT DEVICES button
You may enter this screen at no risk of upsetting anything you have previously done.  The main purpose of the screen is to let you redirect your Domain Name Email to other Email addresses from this screen.  The screen provides various protocols depending on which Email you want to redirect the Domain Name Email to and the type of operating software on your computer.

Connect Devices

This can be a complex area given the number of  Web Mail Application suppliers there are and the different operating systems on computers.  Therefore each reader will have to do their own research specific to their circumstances.   I would also advice a search on YouTube will reveal a wealth of specific information on this matter – most videos last approximately 10 minutes.

Connecting to your Domain Name Email from a Different Email
The previous paragraph gave outline advice on using the cPanel Email section to forward your Domain Name Email to a different (i.e. Desired Management Email) email.  It is possible using the set-up options in the Desired Management Email to reverse the process from cPanel forwarding to “Desired Management Email; to Desired Management Email to Domain Name Email on cPanel.

Reverse Order Domain Name Email Setup

As previously explained due to the number of Web Mail Application each supplier can have its own peculiarities.  Once again do a search on YouTube for the correct advice and solution to suit your circumstances.

Summary
A lot of the above may appear on first reading as “gobble gook”, but when you enter your cPanel and systematically work through items it will start to make sense.  Setting up emails on to correspond with your Domain Name is unlikely to be a high priority initially, but you should be aware of the facility.

WordPress for your Domain Name

What has WordPress got to do with my Domain Name?
A quick recap in case you have parachuted straight into this section of the blog.  At this stage the assumption is that you have purchased a Domain Name and it is  Hosted.

Parachuted In

If you have the Domain Name Hosted correctly you then should be able to look up the url address on the world wide web (www) and see your new Web Site.  Let us assume you have a web site with an address such as https://myprodomain.com and you search for it on the Web.  The result is  a nearly blank page with perhaps an error message.  Why is this?  The answer is that you have no content on the page.

NotePad

The best analogy I can think of is purchasing a brand new note pad.  When you open the notepad cover, all the pages are blank.  A tool you can use to make entries in the notepad is a pen.  There are other tools you can use such as a paintbrush to paint a picture or a crayon to do a drawing.

The Domain name you have purchased and hosted is equivalent to the blank notepad.  It needs a “tool” or “structure” that you can use to build content.  There are many tools available on which  content can be built.  Which “tools or structure” you use will depend on the content you want to place on your Web Site.  The only content builder (also referred to as content platform) I am going to refer to is WordPress.  My reason for this is that it is a FREE tool and widely used.

Tell me About WordPress
The WordPress site states that “WordPress powers more than 23% of the web – a figure that rises every day”.   WordPress can be use for building simple websites, blogs, complex portals and lots of other complicated applications which techies would be quite comfortable to develop and which are beyond me.

WordPress and Domain Names

WordPress is promoted as being  “flexible while still being easy-to-use”.   Do not get too carried away with the simplicity statement.  If you are a new user, until you get a degree of familiarity, which will simply take time, it can still seem intimidating, but stick at it.  If you go to YouTube (Read ALL of this Post First) and do a search there are many tutorials to help you get up to speed with the use of WordPress but do not get ahead of yourself!  You still have to load the software onto your Domain Name Website.

Below is a list of some of the main WordPress features.  Please note the greater part of this narrative is taken from the WordPress site.

Most features provided in WordPress are standard.  The software is Free not only in respect to price but  also there is Freedom to have complete control over the software. You are also free to do whatever you like with the WordPress code, extend or modify it in any way or use it for commercial projects without any licensing fees. There are literally thousands of plugins (these are Free and Paid for Software programs that are built on the WordPress platform) that extend what WordPress does, so the actual functionality is nearly limitless.

  • Simplicity Simplicity makes it possible for you to get online and get publishing, quickly.  WordPress is built to make that happen.
  • Flexibility With WordPress, you can create any type of website you want: a personal blog or website, a photo-blog, a business website etc, etc.  You can make your website beautiful with themes available within the software or additional themes and applications using plugins.
  • Publish with Ease If you’ve ever created a document, you’re capable of creating content with WordPress. You can create Posts and Pages and with the click of a button your content is live and on the web.
  • Publishing Tools WordPress makes it easy for you to manage your content, create drafts, schedule publication, and look at your post revisions.  You can make your content public or private, and secure posts and pages with a password.
  • User Management  it is possible to set up the site in a manner to facilitate Administrators to manage the site, editors  to work with content, authors and contributors to write the content, and subscribers have a profile that they can manage. This provides flexibility to suit the purpose to which you want to use the site.
  • Media Management  Quickly and easily upload images and media to WordPress. This facility add “readability and attraction” to most Web Sites.
  • Full Standards Compliance Every piece of WordPress generated code is in full compliance with the standards set by the W3C. This means that your website will work in today’s browser, while maintaining forward compatibility with the next generation of browser.  The short version is “your Web Site is future proof“.
  • Easy Theme System WordPress comes bundled with two default themes.  There is a theme directory with thousands of themes for you to create a beautiful website.  If none of these appeal to you then upload your own theme with the click of a button.
  • Extend with Plugins  There is a plugin directory with thousands of plugins (Free and Paid). Add complex galleries, social networking, forums, social media widgets, spam protection, calendars, fine-tune controls for search engine optimisation, and forms.
  • Built-in Comments Running a blog? A comments facility provides a space for your friends and followers to engage with your content.  WordPress’s comment tools give you everything you need to be a forum for discussion and to moderate that discussion.
  • Search Engine Optimized (SEO)  WordPress is optimised for search engines.  Additional fine-grained SEO control can be sourced as there are plenty of SEO plugins.
  • Multilingual  WordPress is available in more than 70 languages.
  • Own Your Data  Hosted services come and go. Using WordPress means no one has access to your content. Own your data, all of it – your website, your content, your data.
  • Freedom  WordPress is licensed under the GPL which was created to protect your freedoms. You are free to use WordPress in any way you choose: install it, use it, modify it, distribute it. Software freedom is the foundation that WordPress is built on.

Where or How Do I get WordPress for my Domain Name?
I will provide a narrative as to the Where and the How.  However, you may wish to search YouTube to see an actual “live demonstration(s)” of the process.

Your first action will be to go to your cPanel and scroll down to the Heading “Softaculous App Installer“.  On the left hand side of this screen you will note the WordPress Logo and the word “WordPress”.

cPanel ref WordPress

Click on the WordPress Logo and you will be taken to the following screen:-

WordPress Download Screen

If you click on the “Install Now” button and you have more than 1 Domain Name Hosted you will be asked which Domain you want to install WordPress on.  Make your choice and continue Installation.  Job Done!  The result will be the setting up of the site on your Hosted Domain Name and the provision of an Administrators Site with a User Name and a Password.  You cannot change the User Name but when you enter the site as the Administrator you can change the existing password.

WordPress Opening Screen

After loading “WordPress” onto your Web Site; if you were to enter the “url” of your web site (i.e Domain Name plus prefixes – https://myprodomain.com) then you would a screen similar to that above.  This is a Web Site prior to developing or placing content on the site.

The screen below is the WordPress Dashboard, and this Dashboard can only be accessed as an “Administrator“.  The Administrator is generally the person who sets permissions for access and for most readers of this blog will be the person who will maintain and update the site.

WordPress Dash Board 2

What will you do with WordPress on your Domain Name Web Site?
What you can do with WordPress as stated in the section above is virtually limitless.  WordPress is used by both “Techies” and relative “Novices”  Both the expert programmer and the newcomer can normally develop it for their intended use.

Newcomers to WordPress often do very little with the actual programming possibilities within WordPress.  They tend to load WordPress onto their Hosted Domain Name as a “Platform” or a “Foundation”.  Onto this “Platform” or “Foundation” they upload a Software Program (often referred to as a Plugin) they have purchased which requires WordPress on the Web Site to facilitate the working of the Program.  This makes the technical knowledge required in respect of WordPress very limited.  Their only interest and level of knowledge may be as simple as ensuring  that the final result in respect of the Program loaded is as expected.

It is not the role of this Blog to provide tuition on WordPress, but simply to set the scene as to its capabilities and use.  Where you need expert help on WordPress there are many Free Courses (search Google) and YouTube videos which can be accessed.

Where are we Now?
Alright, progress is being made if you have been following the Blog to date.  Even if you are just “dipping in and out” I trust you have discovered nuggets of useful information.

In the “Next Blog” a few more features of the cPanel in respect of Hosting Domain Names will be explored.
